The renovation risks we see range from relatively straightforward works to projects involving complex structures, contracts, liabilities and professional teams.
Because no two renovation projects are the same, some enquiries can be assessed automatically, while others require the judgement of an experienced underwriter.
Start your enquiry in the underwriting portal and give us the information once. The portal will identify whether the risk can proceed automatically or needs the attention of an underwriter.
That means less waiting where the risk allows it and specialist judgement where it matters.
Eligible risks can be quoted and bound without delay.
Know immediately how your enquiry will be handled.
Complex risks are reviewed by renovation experts.
Expert guidance for every conversation.
How it works
Speak to your client and collect the details of the property, proposed works, contractors and cover required.
Sign in to our underwriting portal, create a new quotation and enter the information requested.
The portal assesses the information and confirms what happens next.
How we respond
Where the enquiry meets our automatic approval criteria, a firm price will be displayed. You can lock the quote, produce the quotation documents for your client and issue the policy when they are ready to proceed.
Where an aspect of the risk requires specialist consideration, the portal will explain a referral has been triggered. A referral does not mean the risk has been declined. It means the enquiry needs human judgement before terms can be confirmed.
Some straightforward private client new business enquiries can be automatically priced and approved.
From the information you provide in the question set, our system will determine whether the enquiry can proceed without further underwriting review.
Where the risk qualifies, you will receive a firm quote quickly and can prepare the quotation documents and bind the policy directly through the portal.
- The policyholder is an individual
- The project is for private residential purposes
- The premium and works fall within the automatic approval criteria
- Basement works, piling, underpinning or deeper excavations
- The property, works and cover requirements do not need specialist review
- The required project and contractor information is complete
If our system triggers a referral after reviewing your online question set, our underwriters will review the information and confirm what is needed to progress the enquiry.
- Commercial projects or company policyholders
- Higher premiums or contract works values
- Listed, non-standard or higher-risk properties
- Specialist contents or liability requirements
- Non-negligent party wall liability
- Projects where contractor, planning or site-management information needs review

Why has Renovation Underwriting introduced an express route for policy enquiries?Broker | How to work with us
-
We want to help brokers place straightforward renovation risks more quickly and efficiently, while ensuring more complex enquiries continue to benefit from specialist underwriting expertise. By combining automated decision-making with experienced underwriters, we provide a faster outcome where appropriate and expert judgement where it matters most.
-
Can I still speak to an underwriter?Broker | How to work with us
-
Absolutely. Our specialist underwriting team is always available to provide advice and guidance. For straightforward enquiries, the portal may provide a firm quote without requiring manual review, which means you get a response more quickly through the express route. But where you have a question, need support or your enquiry is referred, our underwriters are always on hand to help.
-
Do I follow the same process for both private client and commercial renovation enquiries?Broker | How to work with us
-
Yes. Both private client and commercial renovation enquiries begin in the same underwriting portal using the same question set. Where specialist underwriting review is required, your enquiry will be referred to our experienced underwriting team for assessment. Commercial renovation risks are currently referred for underwriting review and are not eligible for the express route.
-
Does a referral mean my enquiry has been declined?Broker | How to work with us
-
No, not at all. A referral simply means that part of the enquiry requires specialist underwriting consideration before terms can be confirmed. Our underwriters will review the information provided, assess the risk and advise on the next steps.
-
Do I need an RU agency before requesting a quote?Broker | How to work with us
-
Yes. Your firm will need an agreed Terms of Business Agreement (TOBA) and access to the underwriting portal before you can request quotations or place business. If you are new to Renovation Underwriting, you can apply to become an RU broker through our agency application process.

What happens after my client accepts the quotation?Broker | How to work with us
-
If your enquiry has received an automatic quote, simply return to the quotation within the underwriting portal and issue the policy when your client is ready to proceed. The relevant policy documentation will then be produced automatically. Where your enquiry has been referred, our underwriters will assess the risk and contact you with the outcome. If cover can be offered, your quotation and policy documentation will then be made available through the portal.
